Australia beat Pakistan in second ODI: Here're records broken
Australia are making the most out of their new found momentum as they took a crucial 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series against Pakistan. Aaron Finch scored a defiant unbeaten century to help his side thwart Pakistan for the second time in a row. Batting first, Pakistan scored 284/7, before Aussies chased down the target with ease. Here are the records broken.
How did the match pan out?
Pakistan didn't enjoy the start they desired and were pegged back at 112/4 at one stage. Wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan (115) and Shoaib Malik (60) added 127 runs to get Pakistan to a position of safety. Aussies did well to restrict their opponents. In reply, Finch (153*) and Usman Khawaja (88) added 209 runs for the opening wicket to help Aussies seal the deal.
Finch registers 13th career ODI ton
Finch, who hit a ton a few days earlier, continued from where he left off. His unbeaten knock was laced with 11 fours and six sixes. This was Finch's 13th career ODI ton and he equalled former South African batsman Gary Kirsten's tally (13 tons). He is one short of equalling David Warner (14 hundreds). The Aussie opener also registered his highest ODI score.
Khawaja surpasses 1,000 runs in ODIs
Usman Khawaja surpassed 1,000 runs in ODI cricket (1,078). The in-form southpaw registered his eighth ODI fifty. The 209-run stand for the first wicket is the second highest tally registered by Aussies against Pakistan. Warner and Travis Head hold the record for the highest stand against Pakistan for the opening wicket (284). This was Finch's second career ODI ton against Pakistan.
Rizwan strikes maiden ton, Malik notches impressive feats
Rizwan registered his maiden ODI ton in his 29th game for Pakistan. Shoaib Malik notched his 44th ODI fifty and surpassed Saeed Anwar and Eoin Morgan in terms of career ODI fifties (both 43). Malik now has 638 runs against Australia in ODIs and went past the likes of former Pakistan stars Ijaz Ahmed and Salim Malik.
Australia have won five successive ODIs
Australia won their fifth ODI match in a row. Earlier, they had beaten India 3-2 in the ODI series. They are on course for a second successive ODI series win in 2019. This new found form will help them immensely during the World Cup 2019.
