Australia beat England in first Test: Records broken
Australia capped off a memorable performance to thrash England in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston. The Aussies, who won the 2017-18 Ashes at home, have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Steve Smith was the hero for Australia with two successive tons. Spinner Nathan Lyon did the damage in the second innings to hurt England. Here are the records broken.
How did the Test match at Edgbaston pan out?
Australia were bowled out for 284 in the first innings. Smith produced a beautiful knock of 144. Stuart Broad claimed five scalps. England rode on a fine debut ton from Rory Burns to gain a crucial 90-run lead. Australia looked in trouble after quick wickets, but Smith (142) and Matthew Wade (110) helped them to post 487/7. England were dismantled in their chase.
Smith scripts a host of Ashes records
Smith, with two tons, has amassed overall 1,116 runs in his past 10 Ashes innings. The senior cricketer also became the fifth Australian batsman to score hundreds in both innings of an Ashes Test. He joined the likes of Warren Bardsley (1909), Arthur Morris (1946/47), Steve Waugh (1997) and Matthew Hayden (2002/03). Smith now has 10 career Ashes centuries in total.
Smith equals Kohli and Inzamam with this feat
Smith now has 25 career Test centuries. He equalled Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli and former Pakistan great Inzamam-ul-Haq (both 25 Test tons). He has the seventh most hundreds for Australia in Tests. Smith is only behind Sir Donald Bradman (19) in terms of Ashes tons by an Aussie. He needs three more tons to surpass former England legend Sir Jack Hobbs (12).

Rory Burns scripted these records for England
Burns (133) became the first England opener (excluding Alastair Cook) to score a Test century on home soil since May 2015. Burns also became the first English centurion in the first Test of a home Ashes since Graham Gooch in 1993. The left-handed Burns also recorded the fifth century by an England opener in their last 100 Test innings.
Burns joins an elite club
Meanwhile, Burns also became just the 10th player to bat on all five days of a Test match. He achieved the feat after walking out to bat on Monday. He perished for just 11 in the second innings.
Stuart Broad gets to 450 Test scalps
England pacer Broad picked up six wickets at Edgbaston. He raced to 450 career Test scalps. He is the fourth pacer to have 450 wickets or more after James Anderson (575), Glenn McGrath (563) and Courtney Walsh (519). Broad also surpassed the 100-wicket mark in Ashes (101). He became the eighth England bowler to do so.
