India's batting woes, outside the sub-continent, continued even against Aussies. After a poor show against South Africa and England earlier this year, the Indian cricket team got off to a poor start in the Test series against Australia. On day one of the first Test in Adelaide, India managed 250/9. Here are the key things that defined the day's play.
Aussie bowlers shine as Pujara lone hero for India
Cheteshwar Pujara was the shining light for India with a sublime 123-run knock. The rest of the side could not stand up against the Aussies, who were disciplined with the ball. All the four premier bowlers picked two wickets each.
Indian batsmen throw their wickets away
Apart from Australian bowlers putting up a commendable shift, the Indian batsmen contributed largely for their own downfall. The shot selection of several experienced players was dismal. The likes of KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane fell to poor shots. All of these batsmen chased deliveries that should have been left out. Rohit Sharma's over aggression cost him as well.
Two big moments on the field help Australia
Pat Cummins bowled full and wide to get the Indian skipper go for an expensive drive. And the ball flew in the gully region. Usman Khawaja took a blinder after diving towards the left. And then Pujara was dismissed run-out from a direct hit by Cummins at the fag end of the day. Credit to the tired Cummins, for knocking the stumps.
Ashwin's 76-ball 25 was a spirited show
Pujara's 62-run stand with Ashwin saved India from embarrassment. At one stage India were reeling at 127/6 and things looked to go downhill. But in came Ashwin, who made sure he put a price on his wicket. He consumed 76 balls for a gritty 25-run knock. Ash supported Pujara and made sure that the side could post a decent total on the board.
