Tim Paine to lead Aussies in ODIs against England
Cricket Australia announced the captains to lead them against England in the ODIs and T20Is. Test skipper Tim Paine has been given the nod as ODI captain with Aaron Finch as his deputy. Finch will lead the T20I squad when Aussies travel to the UK for their tour. Paine was selected Test skipper after the ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australia.
Paine not appointed as permanent ODI skipper
Paine has been appointed as the skipper for the England series but Cricket Australia confirmed that he isn't a permanent choice. CA chief selector Trevor Hohns stated that a permanent skipper will be chosen in due course. It will be interesting to see who gets the ODI captaincy. A 15-man ODI squad and a 14-man T20 squad were also announced for the England tour.
Big task for Aussies post ball tampering saga
With Steve Smith and David Warner serving a 12-month ban, after their involvement in the ball-tampering scandal against South Africa in March, it will be a huge test for Paine. CA has immense faith in the player to lead the side well. Aussies are already without star players Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins. However, Nathan Lyon will make a return.
Can Aussies stop the English charge?
England are currently ranked number one in the ICC ODI Rankings after they overtook India. Eoin Morgan's side thrashed the Aussies 4-1 in ODIs last time the sides met in January 2018. England then went on to beat New Zealand as well in ODI series to stamp their authority. It will be a challenge for Australia, especially without some big names in the squad.
