Marsh, Hazlewood named vice-captains of Australian Test team
Australia have named all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and pace bowler Josh Hazlewood as their vice-captains for Test cricket. The duo will be sharing vice-captaincy in the longest format as Australia want to have a new leadership module and break away from the traditional format. Notably, since the ball tampering incident, Australian cricket has been facing several problems. Here is more on the same.
Earlier, Warner was the deputy leader of Australia
Till March 2018, David Warner was the vice-captain of Australia. But the southpaw was stripped off his role in the wake of ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, earlier this year. Even though, Warner might return to the side after serving his 12-month ban, he will not be given leadership duties. Tim Paine is the current captain of Australian Test team.
Interesting choices by Australia
Marsh has leadership experience as he has captained Western Australia and the Australia A team. It comes as no surprise that the management decided to give him the leadership node. But Hazlewood's inclusion comes as a major surprise. Perhaps his experience in the side became a pivotal factor. The selection process included a vote as well as a formal interview.
New leadership model the way forward for Aussies
"We believe the new leadership model will best support the captain. It is a successful model used across various sporting codes around the world," chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said. There was a panel that conducted the interview. The panel consisted of several people including the selectors and also coach Justin Langer.
Marsh wants to make skipper Paine's life easier
Marsh stated that the selection process was unique, but it bodes well for the future of Australian cricket. He said that the job will be to help out Paine for the betterment of the side. "Josh and I will do everything we can to make Tim Paine's life easier and that's how I see the vice captaincy role," said Marsh.
Australia face Pakistan next
Australia are gearing up for the two-match Test series against Pakistan starting next month. Hazlewood will miss the series due to a back injury. The two vice-captains are expected to support and help the team achieve its goals and objectives.
