2nd Test, Day 2: Centurions Smith, Carey punish Sri Lanka
What's the story
Steve Smith and Alex Carey's centuries have taken Australia to a dominant position in the second Test against Sri Lanka.
The duo's brilliant partnership of 239* runs helped the visitors cross Sri Lanka's first innings total on day two.
At stumps, Australia were 330/3, leading by 73 runs with Smith (120) and Carey (139) at the crease.
Here's more on this.
Smith
Smith leads the show for the Aussies
Smith's century in this match is his second in the series and fourth this summer. It is also the 36th Test century of his career.
This comes after a successful Boxing Day Test where he was the star performer.
Smith was at his usual best. He played a lot of sweeps and reverse sweeps, using his feet well.
He shared a positive 54-run stand alongside Usman Khawaja (36) and then an unbeaten double-century stand with Carey.
Performance woes
Labuschagne's struggles continue in Galle
Marnus Labuschagne was sent packing for a mere four runs by left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who somehow skidded a ball into his pads.
Although the umpire ruled him not out initially, technology revealed that the ball was tracking halfway up the leg stump.
Labuschagne managed 4 runs from 6 balls. Australia were 37/2 with his dismissal.
This came after Travis Head's brisk 21-run contribution, which included three boundaries.
Dismissal
Khawaja falls to Peiris after 1st Test heroics
Khawaja, who scored a double-century in Australia's only innings in the first match, was dismissed for 36 by Nishan Peiris.
His pull attempt of a ball that kept low into the on-side led to his dismissal.
Khawaja ended up with 36 runs from 57 balls, hitting three fours.
He was dismissed in the 25th over, leaving Australia at 91/3.
Strategic move
Carey capitalizes on flat wicket against Sri Lanka
Carey, promoted to No. 5 in the batting order, capitalized on a flat wicket and a lackluster Sri Lankan attack to pile pressure on the hosts.
After Smith hit Jayasuriya for a six over his head, Carey slog-swept Ramesh Mendis over cow corner when he was on 23.
His powerful knock continued as he handled the Lankan bowlers at ease.
His century came off just 118 balls and included nine boundaries and a six.
Record breaker
Smith surpasses Ponting's record in Asia
Smith has now gone past Ricky Ponting to become Australia's highest Test run-scorer in Asia.
He achieved the feat a day after breaking another of Ponting's record of taking the most Test catches by a non-wicketkeeping Australian.
Ponting's tally came from 48 innings at an average of 41.97, while Smith broke it in his 42nd innings at an average of 51-plus.
Records
Smith makes these records
As per ESPNcricinfo, Smith now owns the joint-most Test tons among active players alongside England's Joe Root (36 each).
Overall, the duo boast the joint-fifth-most hundreds in the format. While this was Smith's 17th Test ton as captain, only Ponting (19) has more such scores while leading Australia.
The stand-in Aussie skipper now also owns the joint-third-most Test tons among non-Asian batters in Asia (7).
Feat
Carey joins Adam Gilchrist with Test century in Asia
Carey became the second Australian wicketkeeper to score a Test hundred in Asia.
This makes him the second Australian after Adam Gilchrist to score a century on Asian soil in Tests.
He slammed an unbeaten 139 from 156 balls (13 fours and two sixes).
Carey has 509 runs in Asia at 46-plus (100s: 1, 50s: 2).
In 39 matches, Carey owns 1,740 runs at 35.51. This is now his best Test score. He owns two tons and 9 fifties.
