Ashwin advocates for Chakravarthy's inclusion in Champions Trophy squad
What's the story
Seasoned Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has thrown his weight behind Varun Chakravarthy's inclusion in India's Champions Trophy team.
This comes after Chakaravarthy's impressive performance in the home T20I series against England.
Although he is not part of the initial 15-member squad announced for the tournament, Ashwin believes there is still a chance for Chakaravarthy to join the team.
Career highlights
Chakaravarthy's rise to prominence in T20Is
Chakaravarthy has quickly become India's go-to bowler in T20Is.
His performances against South Africa and England, where he was India's highest wicket-taker, have been widely talked about.
In a five-match T20I series against England, which India won 4-1, Chakaravarthy picked up 14 wickets.
This is the most by an Indian and equaled the record of any bowler in a bilateral T20I series.
Ranking rise
Chakaravarthy's ICC ranking and Ashwin's support
After his brilliant show against England, Chakaravarthy jumped to No.5 in the ICC T20I rankings for bowlers.
His phenomenal numbers and knack of picking wickets in the middle overs have made Ashwin think he could be a surprise addition to India's Champions Trophy team.
"We are all talking about whether he should have been there (Champions Trophy squad), I am thinking there is a chance he might be there," Ashwin said on his channel.
Squad details
India's Champions Trophy squad and potential changes
The 15-member Indian squad for the Champions Trophy, which will start on February 19 in Pakistan and UAE, has already been announced.
The team features four spinners - Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar.
However, Ashwin hints Chakaravarthy could still make his way into this team as changes can be made until mid-February.
Squad speculation
Ashwin's speculation on squad changes
Further speculating about the possible changes in the squad, Ashwin said, "But, if you look at the existing squad, if a seamer goes out and Varun comes in, it will be an added spinner (five). I don't know who they would want to drop (if they think about getting Varun in). We will wait and see."
This shows his uncertainty over who might be replaced if Chakaravarthy is included.
Debut anticipation
Ashwin's prediction for Chakaravarthy's ODI debut
The same Indian squad will take on England in a three-match ODI series beginning February 6.
Ashwin views this as an opportunity for selectors to consider Chakaravarthy for 50-over cricket, a format he has not played internationally but has shown promise in domestically.
"I have a feeling that Varun might get a chance to play in the ODI series between India and England," Ashwin predicted on his channel.
