R Ashwin shares insights on retirement, targets in international cricket
Ravichandran Ashwin, India's leading off-spinner and current top-ranked bowler in the ICC Test rankings, has shared his thoughts on retirement and personal targets. Despite his impressive record of 516 wickets from 100 Tests, the Chennai-born cricketer remains focused on enjoying the game rather than chasing records. He is set to play a crucial role for India in the upcoming five home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand.
Ashwin's approach to cricket
Ashwin, who was named the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2016, revealed that he has no specific targets in mind. His focus is on improving his game every day. "I haven't decided (retirement), but the day I feel that today I don't want to improve, I will leave," Ashwin stated during a conversation with Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin's stance on surpassing Kumble's record
Despite being tipped to surpass Anil Kumble's record of 619 Test wickets, Ashwin clarified that he is not driven by this potential achievement. "Anil (Kumble) Bhai wants me to break his record (of 619 wickets). He is a good human; I have worked with him, but I am not keeping any targets," he said. His primary focus remains on enjoying cricket and maintaining his passion for the game.
Ashwin reflects on personal journey
Ashwin also reflected on his personal journey, particularly the period from 2018 to 2020, which he described as a "new lease of life." He emphasized his desire to continue enjoying cricket without losing his love for the game. "The moment I feel I am losing the joy of my life by having to do more and I am not ready for it, I will leave," he added.
