Ashes: England dominate as Cook delights with a double ton
Amidst questions being raised over his place in team, England's Alastair Cook, with an illustrious 151-test-long career, put on a batting master-class to score an unbeaten double ton at the MCG. His 244*, at the end of Day 3 of 4th Ashes Test, placed the visitors in a strong command of the dead rubber. Let's look at the match highlights.
England's innings
England resumed their innings on Day 3 at 192-2 with Alastair Cook and Joe Root on strike. Cook batted throughout the day and is unbeaten on 244. With contributions from Joe Root, Chris Woakes, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, and Stuart Broad, England's score reads 491/9. Batting at number 10, Broad (56), alongside Cook, produced an entertaining 9th wicket partnership of 100.
Cook's records at the MCG
After today's innings, Cook is now the batsman with highest score (244*) at the MCG going past Viv Richards (208) in 1984. It is his second double century in 2017 and highest score by any batsman this year. Cook is just the third visiting batsman to score two or more double centuries in Australia. Wally Hammond and Brian Lara are the other two.
6th highest run-getter
Just with this innings, Cook went past Mahela Jayawardene, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and Brian Lara, to move from 9th to 6th place in the list of highest run-getters in Tests. As it stands, he has 11,956 Test runs.
