What's the story

Argentina face Nigeria in a crunch Group D game with everything to play for. A win is what Messi's side will be eyeing, as it is the only way in which they can keep their chances alive of progressing to the last 16. Argentina suffered a 0-3 loss against Croatia and earlier drew 1-1 in the opener against Iceland. Here is our pre-match report.

Tweaks

Argentina could ring in some necessary changes

The South American side could switch their formation to a 4-3-3 or even a 4-4-2. The 3-4-3 against Croatia saw them getting floored and Jorge Sampaoli now needs to pick a line-up which puts up a fight tonight. Angel Di Maria and Ever Banega, who were dropped against Croatia, could make a return as all eyes will be on goal-keeper Willy Caballero.

Scenario

How can Argentina still qualify?

It's a win or nothing situation for both Argentina and Nigeria. A loss for any of these sides will see them make an exit. A draw would also be disastrous for Argentina. Moreover, if Iceland go on to beat Croatia, then Argentina would be in danger even if they manage a victory. The team with most goals will progress in that case.

Information

What have the teams said?

Argentina mid-fielder Javier Mascherano brushed off rumors that the team's relation with manager Sampaoli isn't normal. He said the team needs to take charge of the results. Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr feels his side could go the distance against Argentina.

Stat attack: Nigeria vs Argentina

All of Nigeria's victories, at the FIFA World Cup, have come against European nations. A win would see Nigeria reach the knock-outs for the 2nd successive time and a sixth overall. Lionel Messi has failed to score with his last 22 shots at the World Cup. The last time Argentina failed to win even a single game at the World Cup was in 1934.
