Saina, Sindhu win in their opening matches
Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu began their Olympic campaign by winning their singles' opening matches. Saina beat Brazilian 21-17, 21-17. PV Sindhu had a relatively less trouble in winning her match as she won 21-8, 21-9 against Hungarian Laura Sarosi. However, India's Jwala Gutaa and Ashwini Ponnappa were handed defeat in doubles event by Japanese pair. They lost 15-21, 10-21.
Bombayla, Deepika Kumari out of Olympics
After lighting up the Day 5 for India, archers Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari disappointed India as they crashed out of the Olympics in pre-quarters of women's individual event. Deepika Kumari was crushed by Chinese Taipei's Tan Ya-Ting in just three sets. Bombayla Devi lost to Alejandra Valencia of Mexico in four sets. Atanu Das will compete in pre-quarters in men's individual event.
Men's and women's team handed defeat
It was not a good day for Indian hockey at the Olympics as both men and women teams went down to their respective opponents. Indian women's team lost to the United States 3-0, their third loss in four matches. After a win over Argentina in their previous match, Indian men's team was handed a defeat by Netherlands 2-1.
Mixed day for golf
Indian golfers did not have a good day at Olympics. Anirban Lahiri struggled on Day 6, while SSP Chawrasia also did not have a great day. Anirban finished 49th, whereas Chawrasia finished 27th in the leaderboard.
Srikanth wins, men's doubles pair loses
Indian badminton player Kidambi Srikanth won in his opening match at the Olympics. He defeated Mexico's Lino Munoz 21-1, 21-17. Men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy lost to Indonesian pair 21-18, 21-13 after putting on a good fight.
Bopanna-Mirze through to quarter-finals
Indian tennis pair of Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza were through to quarter finals after they beat Australia's Samantha Stosur and John Peers. Indian pair won 7-5, 6-4 in a game which lasted for 73 minutes. They will face Britain's pair of Andy Murray and Heather Watson. In 2012 London Olympics, along with Leander Paes, Sania Mirza had reached quarter-finals in mixed doubles event.
Shiva Thapa crashes out of Olympics
After two Indian boxers won their opening matches, Shiva Thapa lost in men's 56kg category. He was handed defeat by Robeisy Ramirez of Cuba.
