Salman Khan's brother Arbaaz summoned in IPL betting scam
Actor-director Arbaaz Khan, brother of Salman Khan, has been summoned today by Thane Police in relation to an IPL betting scam, reports said. This comes days after police arrested the wanted Sonu Jalan alias Batla, a bookie operating an international ring. It is believed Batla was in contact with many Bollywood celebrities including Arbaaz Khan, and also with wanted gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
Khan's name cropped up as police questioned Jalan
On May 16, police's anti-extortion cell in Thane raided a building in Dombivli after a tip-off. They found the center of an IPL betting ring there. Three were arrested that day, and another two in the next few days. Jalan was nabbed earlier this week when he reached the Kalyan sessions court to "comfort" his captured accomplices. His annual turnover is estimated at Rs. 100cr.
Vindu Dara Singh was arrested in 2013 for IPL betting
Jalan's illegal activities include running an online betting portal during the IPL season, police said. Khan's is the first name to emerge after his arrest. Cops believe many more will be exposed during this probe. In 2013, actor Vindu Dara Singh was arrested along with former BCCI president N Sreenivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan for betting. Both were let go later.
Salim Khan, Arbaaz's father, responds to the development
Khan, who is suspected to have placed massive bets on IPL matches through Jalan, is currently in town, his father Salim Khan confirmed. However, he has denied having any information on Jalan, and claimed he didn't know him.
