#ThisDayThatYear: India beat Sri Lanka to lift 2011 World Cup
7 years ago, on April 2, 2011, India ended their 28-year wait and clinched their second World Cup trophy. India won it in front of the home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The memory still remains fresh as skipper MS Dhoni smashed Kulasekara for a six to win the World Cup title. Here is a throwback to this iconic moment in history.
Sachin Tendulkar finally lifts the World Cup
The night remains etched in the hearts of fans, especially the image of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar being paraded on the shoulders of Pathan and Kohli. Dhoni had gifted Sachin something he badly wanted throughout his career- to lift the World Cup. Kohli's words can't be forgotten "Tendulkar has carried the burden of the nation for 21 years. It was time we carried him."
India restrict Sri Lanka to 274/6
This was Sachin's 6th attempt to win the World Cup and probably his last one. The Sri Lankans posted 274/6 riding on the back of Mahela Jayawardene's unbeaten 103. Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh bagged two wickets each for India.
Dhoni's heroics fulfills India's dreams
In reply, India lost Sehwag on duck and Sachin could just make a contribution of 18. Despite being 31/2, Gautam Gambhir played a brilliant knock of 97 to steady the ship for India. After losing Kohli, Dhoni's 79 ball 91* was the show on display as India managed to beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets with 10 balls to spare.
