Ambati Rayudu suspended from bowling by ICC
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday that Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has been suspended from bowling. Rayudu was reported for a suspect action in the first ODI against Australia earlier this month. He elected not to submit a test of his bowling action required within the stipulated period of 14 days. Here is more.
What had happened up till now?
Rayudu had bowled just two overs against Australia at the SCG in which he gave away 13 runs. There was a concern over the 33-year-old part-time spinner's action. The ICC had stated that Rayudu will be required to undergo testing within a 14-day period. During this time, he was allowed to bowl until the results of testing. But he decided against the same.
Rayudu's suspension to remain until he is tested
Rayudu has been suspended with immediate effect in accordance with clause 4.2 of the ICC regulations. The suspension will remain until he is tested. He will need to demonstrate about his ability to bowl with a legal action.
Rayudu has batted decently in the ongoing series
Rayudu has chipped in with the bat in the ongoing series against New Zealand. He looked a bit unsure at the crease despite scoring 13* and 47 in the first two games. Today, he hit an unbeaten 40 and stayed till the end to see India home. Earlier, he was dropped for the third ODI versus Australia after faltering in the first two matches.
Rayudu doesn't need to bowl: Our take
It is understandable why Rayudu did not submit any test. India have plenty of bowling options in both spin and pace and he is seen as just a batsman. He has hardly bowled for India in the ODI matches he has featured in.
