Alyssa Healy to miss WPL 2025 due to injury
What's the story
Alyssa Healy, the legendary captain of UP Warriorz, has pulled out of the next season of the Women's Premier League (WPL).
The decision comes after Australia's thumping win over England in a one-off Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Australian team created history by completing a 16-0 whitewash, an unprecedented feat in Women's Ashes history.
Tour uncertainty
Healy's participation in T20I tour uncertain
Healy's involvement in Australia's three-match T20I tour of New Zealand, in late March, is still in the air.
She was disappointed to miss the upcoming cricket season but also relieved to have some downtime.
"Unfortunately for me, I've got a couple of months feet up," she had said after Australia's series win.
"I'm pretty bummed by that, but at the same time elated to have a little bit of downtime and try and get my body right."
Injury update
Healy's injury details and recovery process
Healy is currently recovering from a stress reaction in her right foot, due to ruptures to her plantar fascia during the T20 World Cup in October.
This injury made her miss the T20I leg of the series against England, where she played only as a batter and handed over wicketkeeping duties to Beth Mooney.
Apart from this foot injury, Healy has also been dealing with knee issues.
Career challenges
Healy's injury history and future plans
Healy's injury history also includes missing the T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa, and being ruled out of part of the Women's Big Bash League and the series against India.
However, despite the setbacks, she is hopeful about her cricketing future.
"It's been a really frustrating probably 18 months for me ... you get yourself right, back playing, and something else goes wrong," Healy said.
"(I'm) going to have a look at a couple of things and how I can be better, maybe a bit more disciplined in some areas."
Tournament impact
Healy's withdrawal and its impact on WPL
Healy's withdrawal from the WPL comes after New Zealand all-rounder Sophie Devine decided to take an indefinite break from domestic cricket.
The UP Warriorz are yet to announce a replacement for Healy or a new captain for the season. Chamari Athapaththu, Tahlia McGrath, and Deepti Sharma are potential candidates for the captaincy.
In Healy's absence, Uma Chetry is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties for the Warriorz.
