FIFA World Cup 2018: Spain vs Russia- Match Preview
2010 champions Spain would face hosts Russia in a round of 16 battle at the Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday. Spain finished toppers of Group B and are unbeaten so far in the campaign. Meanwhile, Russia will be hoping to bounce back from their group stage defeat against Uruguay. Spain go in as favorites but Russia will not be pushovers. Here is our match preview.
Team news and selection
Spain goal-keeper David de Gea is set to feature in the starting line-up despite facing flak over errors in an underwhelming campaign. Mid-fielder Sergio Busquets is one match away from suspension and which could see Koke come in. Marco Asensio could also start ahead of David Silva. Russia's Igor Smolnikov is suspended for the tie and that could see Mario Fernandes come into contention.
Spain will hope to dominate Russians
Pre-tournament favorites Spain haven't lived up to the expectations till now and tonight, they need to come out strong. They have a complete squad and players need to chip in, as far the final ball is concerned. Diego Costa will be key for Spain in attack with Isco being the prime supplier. Hosts Russia could provide a stern challenge, given they have home advantage.
What's the view from both camps?
Spain right-back Dani Carvajal has stated that it's matter of life or death from now on, as one cannot play for a draw. He seemed confident that the team will find their best form. Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov stated that Spain will provide difficulties but they would try to stop them. He also noted that under new coach Fernando Hierro, Spain play differently.

Since 1991, Russia have never beaten Spain. Spain enjoy facing Russia and have scored 10 goals in their last three encounters. This would be Andres Iniesta's 30th game in major tournaments. Since his goal against Holland in 2010 World Cup, Iniesta hasn't scored in a major tourney. Russia are the best team when it comes to winning aerial duels at this World Cup (67).
