Haryana win Khelo India Games
Haryana have been the sports hotbed of India for years now and the youth of the state have proved it, yet again, by winning 102 medals in the Khelo India School Games. The sports powerhouse won 38 gold, 26 silver and 38 bronze medals to pip Maharashtra to emerge champions on the final day of the tournament. Here's more about it!
Haryana pip Maharashtra to title
Maharashtra, which finished with 36 gold, 32 silver and 43 bronze medals, were the front-runners for the team championship. However, on the final day, Haryana won 15 medals, with their pugilists dominating the ring and bagging 10 gold medals. These extraordinary performances helped Haryana seal the trophy. However, Maharashtra did end up with a better medal tally (111) as compared to Haryana (102).
Khelo India sets up bright future for young athletes
Not just boxing, Haryana girls beat Jharkhand 2-1 to claim gold in hockey whereas the girl's football team defeated Manipur in a closely fought contest, emerging victorious with a score of 5-4. The state, which is known for producing the best wrestlers from India, also lived up to its reputation as 14 athletes from the state claimed gold medals in the sport.
Inaugural edition of the games seems to be a success
Maharashtra dominated the pool by winning 6 yellow medals in swimming. Delhi finished third in the championship, with a medal tally of 25 gold, 29 silver and 40 bronze medals. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan saw the maximum number of participants in the inaugural edition of the Khelo India games. As it seems, the first edition of the games has lived upto its expectations.
