The Indian Premier League is the most watched T20 league in the world and competing in the tournament is a dream for many cricketers. 169 cricketers got lucky in this year's auction. From a billionaire business tycoon's son making his debut to the Under-19 crorepatis, here is our list of amazing facts from the recently concluded 2018 IPL auction.
Under-19 World Cup stars turn crorepatis
Indian youngsters, playing in ongoing Under-19 World Cup, fetched big-bucks at the auction. Speedster, Kamlesh Nagarkoti was bought by KKR for Rs. 3.2 crore. Shivam Mavi was bought for Rs. 3 crore and the man in-form, Shubman Gill got a contract worth Rs. 1.8 crore. Captain Prithvi Shaw bagged a Rs. 1.2 crore contract from Delhi. All these teenagers became crorepatis in a day!
169 cricketers get lucky at IPL auction
After the 2 days of relentless bidding in Bengaluru, a total of 169 cricketers were bought of the 182 vacant slots at the IPL auction. This includes 113 Indians, 56 overseas, 91 capped, 77 uncapped and one player from Associate Nation. A total of 19 'Right to Match' cards were used and Rs. 431.4 crores were spent collectively by the 8 franchises.
CSK spend wisely, KKR lavishly
Kolkata Knight Riders have spent the maximum amount of money at the IPL auction. KKR spent all of their Rs. 80 crore and could manage just 19 players, which is the least among all the teams. Whereas, Chennai Super Kings spent the least amount, Rs. 73.5 crore and bought the maximum number of players with 25 in their squad.
Business tycoon's son sold for Rs. 30 lakh
Aryaman Vikram Birla, who is the son of billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla, was bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 30 lakh. The 20-year old, Aryaman will play alongside Steven Smith, Ajinkya Rahane and Ben Stokes.
Nepal cricketer picked at IPL auctions
Sri Lanka cricket is going through a torrid time and it was evident at the IPL auction, when they were snubbed. Akila Dananjaya & Dushmantha Chameera will be the only Sri Lankans in the 2018 IPL edition. On the other-hand, 17-year-old leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane became the first Nepali player to be bought by a franchise. Delhi paid Rs. 20 lakh for the youngster.
Indian batsmen fetch big bucks
Indian middle-order batsman, Manish Pandey and Indian opener, KL Rahul were the most expensive Indian batsmen. They fetched contracts worth Rs. 11 crore from Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab respectively. All-rounder, Krunal Pandya was the most expensive uncapped player at the auction. He cost Mumbai Indians Rs. 8.8 crore and a 'Right-to-Match' card.
Unadkat is highest paid Indian pacer in IPL history
Speedster, Javdev Unadkat is not only the highest paid Indian cricketer at this year's auction but he has also become the highest paid Indian pacer in the history of the Indian Premier League. Rajasthan Royals signed him for a massive sum of Rs. 11.5 crore. Delhi Daredevils had bought Irfan Pathan for USD 1.9 million in 2011, which is approximately Rs. 8.6 crore.
