Premier League: 5 things we learnt from match-week 1
The 2018-19 season of one of the most watched football leagues has just kicked off. While most of the results were expected, there are some aspects glaring at us, which should be addressed. The picture of where the league is heading shall be clear once a few weeks go by. Here are 5 things we learnt from the first week.
Jose Mourinho's team is missing the flair
The first EPL match of the season saw Manchester United win 2-1 against Leicester City. However, the score doesn't tell half the story, as United, on the field, were not markedly better. Leicester had most of the possession (54%) and one goal came from a penalty. United's mid-fielders have to pull up their socks as tougher opponents would be hard to contain otherwise.
How are Chelsea looking under Maurizio Sarri?
After a comfortable 3-0 victory against Huddersfield, Chelsea's new boss Sarri has reasons to smile. The first goal came from Kante, followed by a penalty kick by debutant Jorghino, and an 80th-minute strike from Pedro. After a fruitful transfer season, they have achieved what they had set out to. They will be a force to reckon with, once the top players start the matches.
Liverpool are up-and-running from day one
Jurgen Klopp has gathered a group of extremely talented individuals and has been able to instil in them the hunger to win. They had a flying start to their campaign after defeating West Ham 4-0 and have found their rhythm and will look to capitalize on the same. Liverpool stars Mo Salah and Mane also opened their accounts in the first match.
Unai Emery needs to adapt to the EPL fast
It is true that facing the best EPL side in your first game, as a Premier League manager, is not easy. However, Unai Emery has been thrown into deep waters and needs to learn swimming fast. His side clearly looked out of depth against Manchester City as they dominated every aspect of the game. Losing 0-2 at home does little to boost one's confidence.
The best team in the first week
Liverpool and Manchester City were clearly the better teams in the first match-week and can become title contenders as the season progresses. United have to improve fast if they don't want to lose early points in the season. Pep Guardiola has the potential to be the first manager after Sir Alex to achieve consecutive title wins.
