#Throwback: Reliving India's first ever Test match
Afghanistan would make their debut in the 5-day format when they take the field against India on June 14 in Bengaluru. This is indeed a historic moment for the war-torn nation as they have made leaps and bounds to get to this phase. In this article, we relive the moments from India's first ever Test match in 1932 against England.
A historical moment for India at Lord's
in 1930s, only Test matches against Australia were held for five days. Therefore, India's first ever Test was a three-day affair against England at Lord's. It started on Saturday on June 25, 1932 with Sunday being the rest day. India lost the match by 158 runs, but their Test journey had a special start at the historical Lord's ground.
Indian bowlers stunned everyone with their intensity
The Test started with at least 25,000 fans witnessing the spectacle at Lord's as England decided to bat first. India bowled out England for 258 in the first innings with Mohammad Nissar bagging a five-for in his debut match. England were struggling at 19/3, before English skipper Douglas Jardine steadied the ship with a 180-ball 79. But Indian bowlers impressed one and all.
India fall short but skipper Nayudu impresses
In reply, India managed to get only 189 runs. However, Indian batsmen displayed a lot of grit. Skipper CK Nayudu top scored for India with his 40-run knock. He shared a 47-run stand with Syed Wazir Ali (31). For England, the stars were pacers Bill Bowes and Bill Voce, who shared 7 wickets between them to dismiss India.
Jardine makes the difference for England
The English skipper was undoubtedly one of the best batsman during that time. After a convincing 79-run knock in the first innings, he replied with 85 runs in the second. England declared at 275/8 and set a target of 346 runs. The visitors needed to bat it out and earn a draw, but a collective England show saw India bundled out for 187.
India's performance praiseworthy
The Indians weren't as sharp as England. But for a team playing their first Test, their performance was impressive. Amar Singh gave a glimpse of his all-round capabilities. The experience at Lord's definitely helped India as they embarked upon a new journey.
