Umar Akmal suspended on first day of PSL 2020
The Pakistan Super League has got off to a negative start off the field. Cricketer Umar Akmal has landed himself in trouble after receiving a temporary suspension from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) under PCB Anti-Corruption Code. The suspension has put his PSL 2020 participation in doubt. Here are further details on the same.
Akmal cannot take part in any cricket-related activity pending investigation
At this moment, Akmal cannot take part in any cricket-related activity pending the investigation being carried out by PCB's Anti-Corruption Unit. The right-handed batsman was all set to take part in the PSL 2020 for Quetta Gladiators. It's a big blow for both the franchise and the player given the current scenario. Akmal would have hoped to contribute for the side.
Defending champions Gladiators to find Akmal's replacement
The PCB issued a statement and has asked Quetta Gladiators to apply for Akmal's replacement for the ongoing season. Meanwhile, the PSL franchise in tweeted that they will not give any comment until the enquiry is concluded. However, they are on the look out for Akmal's replacement. The defending champions will open their campaign against two-time former winners Islamabad United on Thursday.
Akmal was handed a penalty earlier by the PCB
Before receiving the current suspension, the 29-year-old Akmal was in the news after reports suggested that he disrespected the trainers by taking off his shirt and asking them if his body was unfit for playing international cricket. This act forced the governing body to impose a penalty on Akmal. Akmal had later offered his regrets for the incident.
Akmal misses the chance to impress selectors
Akmal would have wanted to use the PSL 2020 season as a platform to get into the Pakistan side. With the ICC T20 World Cup to be held this year, this was an opportunity for him to stake a claim. However, the chance is gone and it will be a bitter pill to swallow. He had last featured against Sri Lanka last year.
Gladiators vs Islamabad United match to be held tonight
Meanwhile, the first match of the PSL 2020 will take place between Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United on Thursday. It's set for a 9:30 PM IST start. The match can be viewed on DSport's official website and app in India.
