3 Pakistan cricketers fined and handed one demerit point
What's the story
Pakistani cricketers Shaheen Afridi, Saud Shakeel, and Kamran Ghulam have been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for separate Level 1 breaches of its code of conduct.
The breaches happened during their tri-series match against South Africa in Karachi on Wednesday.
Each player has been fined and handed a demerit point as part of the disciplinary action taken by the ICC.
Afridi's penalty
Afridi fined for inappropriate physical contact
Afridi was fined 25% of his match fee for breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC's code of conduct, which pertains to "inappropriate physical contact" in a match.
The incident took place in the 28th over of South Africa's innings when Afridi blocked Matthew Breetzke's way as he was running down the non-striker end for a single.
This sparked a heated exchange between the two, forcing them to be separated on field.
Additional penalties
Shakeel, Ghulam fined for celebrating too closely
In a separate incident, Shakeel and Ghulam were also fined for their actions after South African batter Temba Bavuma was dismissed.
The players were penalized with a 10% match fee fine each for "celebrating too closely to batter Temba Bavuma following his run-out in the 29th over."
This was deemed a violation of Article 2.5 of the code, which prohibits "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter."
Sanctions accepted
Players accept sanctions, no prior demerit points
All three players- Afridi, Shakeel, and Ghulam- accepted the sanctions imposed by the ICC without contesting them.
Before this incident, none of them had any demerit points on their records.
The match ended in Pakistan's victory as they chased down South Africa's target of 353 runs with one over remaining.
This was their first successful chase of over 350 runs in ODIs.
