AFG-NZ Test: Day 2 called off; ground faces backlash
The second day's play of the one-off Test between hosts Afghanistan and New Zealand at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida has been called off despite no rain during playing hours. Notably, the toss for the one-off Test, which began on September 9, has not yet taken place. This decision was made by on-field umpires who deemed the outfield unfit for play due to numerous wet patches. Moreover, the ground facilities have been under the scanner.
Ground conditions and efforts to dry the surface
The Greater Noida ground, which is hosting its first-ever Test match, has been experiencing significant rainfall of late. Despite sunny weather on Day 1, the outfield has been waterlogged. On Tuesday, the ground attempted to remove wet patches and replace them with artificial turf but to no avail. They also used fans and super soppers throughout Tuesday in an attempt to dry out the field.
Off-field operations also affected by poor facilities
Furthermore, lack of facilities at the sports complex also impacted off-field operations. The venue was criticized for not having a proper media stand or sufficient seating for fans. Accredited media faced difficulties owing to shortage of water and power, as well as access to female washrooms. Additionally, there was no public announcement system in place, leading to confusion among spectators about the match's status.
Another shocking claim!
In a shocking revelation, an India Today report claimed that a catering team member at the Greater Noida ground was spotted washing utensils inside the washroom. It added to the flak received by the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex.
ACB official criticizes stadium management
An official from the ACB expressed dissatisfaction with the stadium's management, stating, "This is a huge mess, we are never coming back here." The official also revealed that players were unhappy with the facilities. He further disclosed that despite assurances from stadium authorities about media facilities being in order, they were found wanting.
