Adam Zampa to play his 100th ODI, downplays Ashes prospects
Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa is on the verge of a significant personal achievement as he preps for his 100th ODI appearance. Despite being a key player in Australia's white-ball triumphs, Zampa has acknowledged that his chances of participating in The Ashes are slim. Zampa, pivotal in Australia's ICC 2023 World Cup win, is set to earn his 100th ODI cap in the first clash of a five-game series against England at Trent Bridge. Here's more.
Zampa's Test debut remains uncertain
Despite his impressive performance in shorter formats, Zampa has not yet debuted in Test cricket. He expressed his acceptance of this reality at Trent Bridge. "Realistically, I'm probably not going to play in an Ashes in my career," he said as per AFP. He added that while there is still a desire to play Test cricket, participating in an Ashes series against England either at home or abroad seems unlikely.
Zampa content with white-ball career amid limited Test opportunities
Australia's Test team has traditionally relied on Nathan Lyon as their lead spinner in red-ball cricket. With emerging talents such as Todd Murphy and Mitchell Swepson competing for positions, Zampa's opportunities in Test cricket have been limited. Nevertheless, he remains content with his success in white-ball formats and enjoys the competitive edge he has with England in limited-overs games. "The Ashes has its own charm, but playing against England in any format is special," Zampa said.
Zampa cherishes upcoming 100th ODI appearance
As he nears his 100th ODI, Zampa expressed gratitude for his journey. "I never thought I'd play this many matches for Australia," he said. He called it an incredible honor to represent his country for the 100th time and looks forward to making the occasion even more special with his family present. Although Australia plans to defend their 50-over title at the 2027 ICC World Cup in southern Africa, Zampa has not set any retirement plans.
