Tim Paine dropped, Aaron Finch will captain Australia in ODIs
Australian Test skipper, Tim Paine, has been dropped from the ODI side as Aaron Finch replaced him as their new captain for the 3-match ODI series against South Africa in November. Notably, Finch was recently given the reigns of T20 squad. Alex Carey and Josh Hazlewood have been selected as vice-captains. Paine averaged 7.2 in Australia's 0-5 ODI whitewash by England in June.
Finch's comments on being named the captain
Aaron Finch, on being named the ODI captain, said. "It's very exciting. I'm very humbled, very honored to lead the side and lead Australia". He has also welcomed the decision of making a bowler the vice-captain, saying, "A lot of the time, batters are in leadership roles and bowlers are neglected in terms of that and it's almost an 'us versus them' at times.".
National selector's comments on the appointments
Australia's national selector Trevor Hohns explained that the choice of team leaders was based on the presentation, which each player had made regarding their plans for the national team and the future of Australian cricket. Their behavior on and off the field was also a factor. Hohns expects the three leaders to propel Australian cricket forward as they prepare to defend the World Cup.
How does the Australian team look?
Despite a poor display against Pakistan, Shaun Marsh has still managed to hold on to his spot in the squad. Nathan Lyon, however, has been omitted. Finch, Marsh, Travis Head, and Glenn Maxwell will shoulder the responsibility of leading the Australian batting attack, along with Chris Lynn, who has found a place in the squad. Alex Carey will take over wicket-keeping duties from Paine.
