Asitha Fernando could become Sri Lanka's greatest pacer: Aaqib Javed
Sri Lanka's bowling coach, Aaqib Javed, has expressed high hopes for fast bowler Asitha Fernando. This comes after Fernando's impressive performance during the recent Test tour of England. The right-arm pacer finished as the highest wicket-taker in the three-match series, claiming 17 wickets including a five-wicket haul at Lord's. Prior to this tour, Fernando had also shown promise in a home series against India.

Fernando's exceptional performance has led to a significant rise in his position in the ICC Test Rankings for bowlers. He broke into the top 10 after his recent displays, leaping nine places to secure the eighth spot. Despite a slow start to his Test career with only seven wickets from his first four Tests, Fernando's fortunes changed with a 10-wicket match haul against Bangladesh in his fifth Test.

Javed has been vocal in his praise for Fernando, even drawing comparisons with former Pakistan pacer Mohammed Asif. "I think this guy is improving in the rankings as well, the bowling rankings," Javed said following the conclusion of the series between Sri Lanka and England.

Javed believes that Fernando has the potential to become the greatest ever Sri Lankan fast bowler. He stated, "I think he has got all the potential. I was discussing with him, another seven to eight years, if you look after yourself, you might be the greatest ever Sri Lankan fast bowler." Javed also praised Fernando's unique skills and impressive pace.
