IPL 2023: A look at top five record-breaking centurions
Chennai Super Kings claimed the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) title after beating Gujarat Titans in a high-octane final in Ahmedabad. Although the Titans missed out on a second successive title, their players won the Orange and Purple Caps. Shubman Gill, who smashed a record-breaking 890 runs, ended up scoring three tons. The season saw several other centurions enter the record books.
Shubman Gill: Youngest-ever centurion in IPL playoffs
After smashing two tons, Gill powered GT in Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The Indian batter smashed a 60-ball 129 against the five-time champions. Aged 23 years and 260 days, he became the youngest centurion in IPL playoffs. Gill's 49-ball ton became the joint-fastest in IPL playoffs history. He equaled Wriddhiman Saha (2014 final) and Rajat Patidar (2022 Eliminator).
Virat Kohli: Third player with successive IPL tons
Virat Kohli slammed two tons in IPL 2023, with his first coming against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It was his first IPL century since April 2019. His second ton that season came in the very next game, versus the Gujarat Titans, albeit in a losing cause. Kohli became the third player to slam successive IPL tons after Shikhar Dhawan in 2020 and Jos Buttler in 2022.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: RR's youngest IPL centurion
Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had a breakthrough season, where he slammed over 600 runs. The left-handed batter brought up his maiden IPL century in Match 42 against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Jaiswal became the seventh player to have slammed a century for RR in the IPL. At 21 years and 123 days, he became RR's youngest centurion (IPL).
Suryakumar Yadav: MI's first centurion since IPL 2014
Suryakumar Yadav unleashed his beast mode after having a slow start in IPL 2023. He smashed an unbeaten 103 off 49 balls (11 fours and 6 sixes) against the Gujarat Titans Match 57. SKY became MI's first centurion in the IPL in nine years. Lendl Simmons scored the last IPL ton for MI in 2014 (100* vs Punjab Kings).
Venkatesh Iyer: KKR's second IPL centurion
Kolkata Knight Riders dasher Venkatesh Iyer scripted history with a ton against Mumbai Indians in Match 22. Venkatesh slammed 9 sixes and 6 fours and finished with a 51-ball 104. In the process, the Indian batter became the second centurion for the Knight Riders after Brendon McCullum, who smashed a record-breaking century in IPL's first-ever encounter.
