It is a commonly held notion that successful sportsmen and women don't excel in academics since they start training from a young age. However, there have been examples of highly accomplished sportspersons who have been successful in academics as well. Today being Engineer's Day, here we look at 3 Indian cricketers who hold engineering degrees.
India's spin legend: Anil Kumble
The third highest wicket-taker in Tests, ace leg-spinner Anil Kumble was regarded as one of the gentlemen of the game. No wonder, he excelled in academics as well. The former Indian coach completed his pre-university college education from National College Basavanagudi. He then enrolled into RV College of Engineering (Bengaluru) to pursue mechanical engineering.
India's pace sensation: Javagal Srinath
One of the most lethal pacers of all time, Javagal Srinath, also holds an engineering degree. He retired from the game in 2003 and then became an ICC Match Referee. He ended up with 315 ODI wickets and 236 Test scalps. Srinath got his engineering degree in the Instrumentation Technology from the Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering in Mysore.
Modern day spin king: R Ashwin
Ashwin has reached great heights in Test cricket and is India's premier spinner since quite some time now. With 327 Test scalps, Ashwin has been a pillar of the Indian side. He had made his Test debut in 2011. Prior to that, he graduated in Information Technology from the SSN College of Engineering, Chennai. Interestingly, Ashwin has also worked with Cognizant Technology Solutions.
