What's the story

Donkey Kong
Take me down to New Donk City
Super Mario Odyssey has a reference to its own roots, Donkey Kong.
The Metro Kingdom in the game has a city named New Donk City and the residents are New Donkers.
Streets are named after Donkey Kong characters.
Donkey Kong came out in 1981 and the game brings back the original damsel in distress, Pauline!
The nostalgia reaches fever pitch in this level.
Super Mario 64
Respect to the start of Super Mario
Nintendo makes a nod to the original 3D Super Mario as well.
Super Mario 64 is referenced in Mushroom Kingdom.
Whenever Mario collects moons, they show up as stars on-screen, as the old game had. Old gamers can see the 'Power Stars' back in action.
The best part is the Mushroom Kingdom suit, which is the original Mario 64 suit.
The self-reference is brilliant!
Hand gestures
Bring back the beloved celebrations
Mario has made some iconic hand celebrations over many games.
Super Mario Odyssey, masterfully, references all of them.
If players watch when he earns a Power Moon, he makes three old celebrations.
The peace sign from Super Mario 64, the original.
He also has the open palm sign from Super Mario sunshine and the air punch from Super Mario Galaxy.
Did you notice these?
Captain Toad
New hope for an unnoticed character
Captain Toad is an explorer from Nintendo's Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
The game was great but went unnoticed.
However, he is back in this edition and can be found in different kingdoms.
Mario might have to complete complex steps or just look behind a rock.
However, once found, Toad pops up occasionally to offer a Power Moon for finding him.
Outfits
Dressed to impress, Mario's history in costumes
Super Mario Odyssey allows access to various costumes that refer to Mario's broad and diverse history.
His doctor outfit is a reference to 1990 Dr. Mario.
The popular Super Mario Maker is referenced in Mario's builder outfit.
His classic cap and suit are a nod to the classic Donkey Kong.
Mario Party 2 outfits also make an appearance through cowboy and pirate outfits.
