Commonwealth Games Day 3: Weightlifters on top, Manoj advances
India had quite a productive day at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games being held at the Gold Coast. The wrestling contingent continued its supremacy as India won two gold medals on Saturday. Meanwhile, apart from boxing and table tennis, India weren't impressive in the other events, especially in basketball. Here is how the Indian contingent fared on Day 3 of the event.
Double delight for India in weightlifting
India won two gold medals in weightlifting to continue the dominance. After Sathish Kumar Sivalingam bagged the gold medal in the men's 77kg category, Venkat Rahul Ragala clinched the gold in men's 85kg category. He created a record by becoming the first Indian to bag a CWG medal in this category. This was India's 4th gold medal in weightlifting.
Manoj Kumar, Sarita Devi in boxing quarters
Indian boxer Manoj Kumar reached the quarter-finals of the men's 69 kg category. The talented boxer progressed to the last eight with a win over Tanzania's Kassim Mbundwike in the round of 16. Meanwhile, veteran Sarita Devi too won her round of 16 bout to reach the quarters of women's 60 kg event. She went on to beat Kimberly Gittens of Barbados.
India progress in men's and women's table tennis event
The Indian table tennis men's and women's teams progressed into the semi-finals of the 21st Commonwealth Games. Both teams showed their authority after winning by 3-0 against same opponents Malaysia. The women's team will face England next on Sunday in the semis.
Chinappa loses in squash, poor result for basketball teams
India's squash challenge in the 21st Commonwealth Games ended after Joshna Chinappa bowed out in the quarters. She lost to New Zealand's Joelle King 11-5, 11-6 and 11-9 in just 31 minutes. Indian men's basketball team was blown apart by England 100-54 in the preliminary round Pool B encounter. Meanwhile, the women's team lost to Malaysia 82-75 to suffer second consecutive loss.
