Will UAE host 2024 Women's T20 World Cup?
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been shortlisted as a potential host for the impending 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup. This announcement comes amid growing concerns about the scheduled tournament in Bangladesh, wher a civil unrest has been escalating. Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has already declined to take over as as host nation. As per Cricbuzz, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering Dubai and Abu Dhabi as possible venues.
BCB requests extension from ICC
A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official revealed that the board has requested an additional five days from the ICC before a final decision is made. If granted, this would coincide with a scheduled online directors' meet. The ICC was initially expected to finalize plans for the World Cup by August 15, but this has been delayed due to BCB's request.
BCCI declines hosting due to weather conditions
As mentioned, the BCCI has declined the opportunity to host the tournament due to unfavorable weather conditions and the pressure of hosing the 2025 ODI World Cup. "They (ICC) have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no. We're in the monsoon and on top of that we will host the women's ODI World Cup next year," stated Jay Shah, Secretary of BCCI. As a result, the ICC is exploring potential hosts like UAE.
BCB's efforts to retain tournament amid unrest
Despite an ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, the BCB is hopeful of retaining the tournament. The board has requested an extension from the ICC and is confident to devise a plan that meets the hosting requirements. The tournament is set to commence on September 27 with warm-up games, and will officially run from October 3-20. In light of recent violence in Bangladesh, several BCB officials, including President Nazmul Hassan, have left the country.
UAE's suitability as potential host
It is understood that the ICC is seeking a host country with a similar time zone and weather conditions to Bangladesh, a criteria that UAE meets. Additionally, the Emirates Cricket Board has world-class infrastructure and is reportedly interested in hosting the event. Other countries like Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka have also expressed interest. With less than 50 days remaining until the tournament begins, a decision needs to be made soon.
