English football: Now red and yellow cards for managers too
The Football Association (FA) will punish the managers for behaving badly on the sidelines from this season onwards. Managers will be handed red and yellow cards, just like players, for going against the rules on the field. The new move will be witnessed across England's top professional competitions, barring the Premier League. Here is more on the same.
How does it impact the managers?
Cards for managers will be noted down and in case of repeated violations, the managers might face bans as well. Players face three-match ban for a straight red card and back-to-back yellows in a match lead to one match suspension. Further, an accumulation of 5 yellow cards in a season could result in a ban. Managers would face similar fate if they show dissent.
What's the scene in the Premier League?
The Premier League will not have this rule as managers will be given verbal warnings, but the other tiers will see the introduction of this move. The new system will also be implemented in the Cup competitions - FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. The EPL will adapt to same rules that center around accumulated stage 1 warnings, but it will be done verbally.
Know the rules for referees
Managers will receive yellow cards for instances such as kicking the water bottle, sarcastic claps and gestures that undermine match officials. Red cards will be meted out if any manager is involved in a violent conduct of any kind. Notably, factors such as spitting and stopping an opponent player from restarting the game on the touchline will lead to a straight red.
What EFL chief executive Sean Harvey stated?
EFL chief executive Sean Harvey hopes that the new rules will have an impact. "Professional football forms opinions and is what people look up to; what professional footballers do and indeed managers do is often deemed as being the acceptable norm," he said.
