Sania Mirza registers easy win at Australian Open
India's Sania Mirza along with her doubles partner Czech Republic's Barbora Strycova started their campaign at the 2017 Australian Open with a win in the first round. They defeated Jocelyn Rae and Anna Smith of the United Kingdom in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in just an hour. Seeded fourth at the tournament, the Indo-Czech pair had won Apia International tennis tournament last week.
Bopanna, Cuevas fight their way into round two
Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguay's partner Pablo Cuevas went past Argentine-Brazilian pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Thomaz Bellucci in the first round of men's doubles event. They registered a 6-4, 7-6(7-4) victory in one hour and 24 minutes.
Cilic, Kyrgois crash out in second round
World number seven Marin Cilic was sent packing by Dan Evans in second round of the men's singles event. Evans won 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the next round. Australian number one Nick Kyrgios lost to Andreas Seppi after taking a two set lead. Seppi won the match 1-6, 6-7(7-1), 6-4, 6-2, 10-8 to give one of the major upsets of tournament.
Federer, Nishikori, Murray advance into next rounds
Roger Federer advanced into the third round of men's singles after defeating Noah Rubin 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(7-3) in just over two hours. Andy Murray overcame an ankle injury and defeated Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-0, 6-2 in straight sets. Fifth seeded Kei Nishikori also had a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over France's Jeremy Chardy to reach the third round of the tournament.
Angelique Kerber celebrates birthday in style; Venus advances too
Top seeded women's singles player Angelique Kerber celebrated her 29th birthday with a win over fellow German Carina Witthoeft in the second round of the tournament. She won 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 and will now face Kristyna Pliskova. Venus Williams defeated Stefanie Voegele 6-3 6-2 in straight sets to reach the third round of Australian Open for the 13th time.
