Germany defeat New Zealand; enter quarterfinals of Hockey Junior WC
Germany became the first team to enter the quarter-finals of the 2016 Men's Hockey Junior World Cup at Lucknow. They defeated New Zealand 2-1 to top the Pool C. The six-time champions had to struggle to win after NZ struck in the fourth minute to take the lead. Germany scored their first goal in 24th minute while the winning goal came in 51st.
Argentina held by Austria in a 1-1 draw
In the only Pool A match of the day, minnows Austria held the South American giants Argentina in a 1-1 draw. Both the teams were awarded a point.
Netherlands rout Malaysia 7-2 in Pool B
Playing in place of Pakistan, Malaysia was handed a huge loss in their opening game at the 2016 Men's Hockey Junior World Cup. Malaysia lost Netherlands 2-7. The Dutchmen scored their first goal in the 19th minute and went on to score six continuous goals. Malaysia scored a goal in the 59th minute, but it was too late for them to bounce back.
Belgium crush Egypt 4-0
In the first Pool B match of the day, Belgium had a one sided win against Egypt. They won 4-0, with Phillipe Simar, Henri Raes, Alexandre van Linthoudt and Alexis Lemaire scoring a goal each.
Spain hands Japan a 4-1 loss
In the other Pool C match, Spain registered their first win of the tournament after defeating Japan 4-1. Lucas Alcalde Garcia scored two goals for the European team.
Changes in schedule
International Hockey Federation has pre-poned all the final matches of the day owing to smog over the stadium. The matches will now start at 6 PM. On Saturday, 10 December, South Korea will play against Austria while Argentina will face Australia in Pool A. In Pool D, South Africa will take on Canada and the other match will be played between India and England.
