Rohit, who is playing his 28th career Test match, smashed his fourth century. Interestingly, this was his fourth century at home and a maiden one against SA. This was the first time Rohit and Mayank opened in a Test match for India and they etched their names into the record book. They became the seventh Indian pair to stitch 100-plus runs in first innings.

This was Rohit's first Test match as an opener of the Indian cricket team. Prior to this, he played 27 Tests and in all these matches, he featured in the middle order. He was promoted as an opener after an inconsistent KL Rahul was dropped.

Meanwhile, Rohit also amassed his sixth consecutive 50+ score in Tests on home soil. Prior to this innings, his scores read 82, 51*, 102*, 65, and 50*.

With this knock, he became the first Indian player to score a century in each Tests, ODIs and T20Is as an opener. Rohit also became the first Indian opener to hit four sixes in a Test innings before completing a century in this decade. He became the fourth Indian opener to score a century in the maiden innings as an opener in Tests.
