Zomato launches weather network to provide real-time temperature, rainfall updates
Zomato, a prominent food aggregator in India, has launched the country's first crowd-supported weather network. The announcement was made by CEO Deepinder Goyal today. The innovative system, named Weatherunion.com, aims to provide real-time updates on various weather conditions such as temperature and rainfall. Goyal believes this wealth of information could offer new opportunities for businesses and research institutions.
A network of over 650 weather stations
Weatherunion.com is a unique network that consists of more than 650 ground-based weather stations. Currently, it is operational in 45 major Indian cities, making it the most extensive private weather infrastructure in the country. Goyal confirmed plans to expand this network further, offering localized, real-time data on important weather elements such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall.
Free access to weather data
In a significant move, Zomato is offering free access to the Weatherunion.com platform. Goyal stated that the data is too valuable to be kept private or monetized. As part of Zomato's Giveback initiative, they are providing this real-time weather data for public benefit. The information can be utilized by businesses and institutions to enhance productivity and stimulate economic growth.
Zomato's partnership with CAS-IIT Delhi
The Weatherunion.com platform was created in collaboration with CAS- IIT Delhi. The objective of this partnership is to provide accurate and timely weather information for informed business decisions. Goyal also invited volunteers to contribute by offering space on their premises for installing these weather stations. He shared that several Zomato employees have already installed weather stations at their residences, contributing to the nation-building initiative.
