YouTube Shorts is getting AI-driven features: Check what's new
YouTube is set to revolutionize its Shorts platform by integrating Veo, an artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by Google DeepMind. This advanced technology will enable creators to produce high-quality backgrounds and concise six-second video clips. The update also includes AI-assisted comment responses and AI-generated thumbnails for enhanced content creation, as revealed in YouTube's recent blog post.
A significant upgrade from Dream Screen
The integration of Veo into YouTube Shorts represents a significant progression from Dream Screen, the platform's previous AI tool launched in 2023. Unlike its predecessor which was limited to generating backgrounds for Shorts, Veo offers creators the ability to not only create content but also remix and refine existing clips. This enhanced functionality provides creators with greater creative control over their content.
Veo's unique features and future integration plans
Veo allows creators to generate six-second video snippets specifically for Shorts, a first for the platform. By using Dream Screen, users can create four unique images, select one, and convert it into an animated video. This feature enhances storytelling by filling visual gaps and improving narrative flow. YouTube has confirmed plans to incorporate Veo into Dream Screen later this year, ensuring all AI-generated content is labeled with DeepMind's SynthID watermarking technology.
'Jewels' and enhanced language dubbing
In addition to Veo, YouTube is introducing a "Jewels" feature that allows viewers to send virtual gifts during livestreams, aiming to boost viewer-creator engagement. The platform is also improving its language dubbing capabilities by adding support for French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. A new "expressive speech" mode is being trialed to provide more authentic audio dubs that preserve the original tone, pitch, and background ambiance of the creator's content.
YouTube expands community hubs and 'hyping' feature
YouTube is extending its Community hubs to more channels, facilitating interaction between creators and followers through post sharing and replies. The platform's "hype" feature, initially tested in Brazil, Turkey, and Taiwan, is also being introduced to additional markets. This tool allows users to show support for their favorite creators with videos receiving the most hype points featured on a special leaderboard.
