YouTube's new feature lets parents monitor their teen's activity
YouTube is introducing a new supervision feature worldwide, designed to allow parents and guardians to connect their accounts with those of their teenage children. According to the company, this initiative aims to enhance parental awareness of their teen's online behavior and promote safe content creation practices on the platform. The tech giant first hinted at this development last month.
How does it work?
The supervision feature can be activated through YouTube's Family Center, enabling parents to access shared insights such as their child's subscriptions, comments, and upload count. Both linked accounts will receive email notifications highlighting significant activity like a new video upload or the initiation of a livestream by the teenager. This is described by YouTube as the "first iteration" that expands on existing supervision tools for preteens' accounts.
Plans to expand supervision feature
YouTube has indicated that more features may be added to this tool in the future, providing further insights into teenagers' online activity. The company also emphasizes that the new feature offers "mutual control," meaning either party - the teen or parent - can disable supervision at any time. This aspect underscores YouTube's commitment to balancing parental oversight with respect for teenagers' autonomy on its platform.
