Redmi S2 with 16MP AI selfie camera launched in China
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has launched the first smartphone in its Redmi S-Series. Titled Xiaomi Redmi S2, the phone is being touted as the 'Best Redmi selfie phone' ever, thanks to a 16MP sensor with larger 2-micron pixels. Launched in China, the phone costs CNY 999 (Rs. 10,600) for 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant and CNY 1,299 (Rs. 13,700) for 4GB RAM/64GB option. Here's more.

Redmi S2 borrows design aesthetics from the Redmi Note 5 Pro to retain thin top and bottom bezels on the front and a vertically-positioned rear dual-camera setup. It features a 5.99-inch HD+ (720x1440 pixels) display with a 70.8 percent NTSC color gamut. Measuring 160.73x77.26x8.1mm and weighing 170 grams, the Redmi S2 comes in Champagne Gold, Platinum Silver, and Rose Gold color options.

The main highlight of the Redmi S2 is its AI-powered front camera which sports a 16MP sensor with 2-micron pixels. The front shooter offers AI Portrait Mode, AI Smart Beauty, Front HDR, and Face Unlock. On the rear, the dual lens setup comprises a 12MP + 5MP setup with an f/2.2 aperture, PDAF autofocus, LED module and offers Portrait Mode, HDR, and facial recognition.
Under the hood
Redmi S2 is powered by the Snapdragon 625 processor paired with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB inbuilt storage (expandable up to 256GB via microSD card). With support for dual-SIM cards, the phone runs MIUI 9 based on Android and packs a 3,080mAh battery. In terms of connectivity, you get 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, a 3.5mm audio jack, and Micro-USB port.
Redmi S2 may launch in India with stock Android experience
According to reports, the Redmi S2 might launch in India by the end of this month or early next month. In terms of hardware specs, the global variant of the phone is expected to be identical to its Chinese counterpart. Reportedly, the global variant may ship with stock Android 8.1 Oreo and be a part of Android One program.
