Xiaomi starts rolling out Android Oreo update for Mi A1
When Xiaomi launched its first ever Android One device, the Mi A1, with Android Nougat in September, it promised an update to Android Oreo before 2017 end. Fulfilling its promise, the Chinese device maker started rolling out Oreo to the Android One device in India. This makes it the first smartphone under Rs. 15,000 to receive Android Oreo. The big Oreo update for Mi A1!
Launched under Google's Android One initiative
Mi A1, which earlier got the Android Oreo beta update, is now receiving the stable build of Oreo. All users will receive it as an OTA (over-the-air) update in a phased manner. Once the update becomes available for a device, users would receive a notification. Users can also manually check for the Oreo update in "Settings" by clicking on About Phone>System Updates>Check for Update.
Update will be rolled out in batches: Xiaomi
The Android 8.0 Oreo update for Mi A1 sized 1107.4MB also includes the December Android security patch and many new features. The update started rolling out on 31 December. However, Xiaomi said that to be able to update to Android Oreo, Mi A1 users should first ensure that their devices are updated to the version 7.12.19 released in December.
What does the Mi A1 offer?
Mi A1 features a 5.5-inch Full HD display and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, 4GB RAM, and 64GB internal storage (expandable up to 128GB). It comes with a dual 12MP+12MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. It has a fingerprint sensor on the back. It has 3.5mm headphone jack and a 3,080mAh battery. The dual-SIM (nano) smartphone supports 4G VoLTE connectivity.
What features does the Oreo update bring?
The Mi A1 Oreo update includes several new features like the picture-in-picture (PIP) mode for video applications, faster charging, app notification dots, autofill, Notification Channels, etc. It also brings an improved App Drawer (launch app drawer by swiping up anywhere on screen), Doze on Go mode (for enhanced battery-life), Rescue Party (recovery from constant bootloops), and Google Play Protect (checks for malicious apps).
Device might receive Android P, too
Mi A1 was developed by Google and Xiaomi. Unlike other Xiaomi phones running on MIUI, Mi A1 has stock Android OS. It runs Android 7 Nougat out-of-the-box. It is among the few mid-range smartphones that will receive Oreo. It would also reportedly get Android P.
