Xiaomi demos 5G-ready Mi Mix 3 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
In the latest development, Xiaomi has showcased its 5G-ready variant of the Mi Mix 3 at a conference in China. The Chinese tech giant showed web surfing as well as live video streaming on the 5G network. The 5G version of Mi Mix 3, expected to launch in Europe next year, features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. Here's our roundup of the device.
Mi Mix 3 5G version: At a glance
The 5G version of Mi Mix 3 will retain the design of the regular flagship model. So, you'll have an all-screen look with an ultra-slim chin to boast a screen-to-body ratio of 93.4% - a design achieved by hiding the front camera on a sliding mechanism. Further, the phone will sport a 6.4-inch full-HD+ (1080x2340 pixels) OLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
For the shutterbugs and selfie lovers
Again, in terms of camera optics, the 5G variant will not be different from the regular model. This variant will also sport a dual rear-camera setup comprising a 12MP (f/1.8) wide-angle lens, paired with a 12MP (f/2.4) telephoto lens. Up front, the manual slider will house a 24MP+2MP dual camera setup with selfie light and AI-based image enhancement features.
Under the hood
The 5G version of Mi Mix 3 will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and an X50 5G modem which delivers a maximum download speed of 2Gbps. In comparison, the regular Mi Mix 3 comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Further, the 5G variant is expected to come with 10GB RAM, 256GB internal storage, Android Pie and a 3,850mAh or bigger battery.
Xiaomi could be world's first OEM to launch 5G-ready smartphone
Interestingly, in October, Xiaomi had claimed to be the first OEM to launch a 5G-ready smartphone. But back then, the tech giant had only unveiled the regular Mi Mix 3 flagship. However, the company looks primed to win the prestigious title considering it has already demoed the 5G variant of Mi Mix 3 and is expected to launch it in Europe by early 2019.
The 5G race
The race to launch the 5G-ready smartphone is getting intense. OnePlus has confirmed that its next flagship will support 5G whereas Samsung is expected to launch the 5G variant of Galaxy S10 by early 2019. Further, Huawei, OPPO and Vivo are also expected to launch their 5G-ready smartphones by next year. Meanwhile, we may see a 5G-compatible iPhone sometime in 2020.
