Xiaomi, Microsoft sign MoU to collaborate on AI tech, hardware
Microsoft and Xiaomi have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work collaboratively in the fields of cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and hardware. Under this, Xiaomi will be able to use Microsoft's Azure cloud computing products to expand data storage services and develop upgraded smart devices. In return, Microsoft will get more reach and access to the Chinese market.
Microsoft might integrate Cortana into Xiaomi's Mi AI smart speakers
Last July, Xiaomi launched a modern-looking smart speaker for $45 called Mi AI. Now with the MoU in place, the voice-enabled budget speaker might receive Microsoft Cortana integration to expand its reach. Microsoft is speculatively on board since its own Harmon Kardon Invoke smart speaker with Cortana integration failed to compete with the widely popular Amazon Echo and Google Home speakers.
Xiaomi to benefit from Microsoft's AI tech
Apart from smart speaker products, the two companies also plan to collaborate on Microsoft's AI technology like vision, speech, natural language processing, and conversational intelligence. These currently help make Microsoft's consumer-facing software like Bing, Edge, Cortana, SwiftKey, and Skype smarter. Xiaomi will also potentially be able to enter international markets with a joint marketing and channel support.
An MoU is not a legally binding contract
Microsoft and Xiaomi first partnered in 2015, when they signed a deal to test Windows 10 on Xiaomi smartphones. However, it should be noted that an MoU doesn't make a partnership legally binding and doesn't clarify the financial terms of the collaboration, if any.
