X gives users more control over their post engagement
Elon Musk's social media platform, X, formerly called Twitter, has announced a new feature that lets users limit replies to their posts to verified accounts only. This update comes on the heels of last year's introduction of paid verification for X Premium (Twitter Blue), where users can get a blue checkmark for $7.99 (Rs. 665) per month. However, this change might make it harder for non-paying users to call out misinformation, as studies show a steady rise in such content.
Reply limit options expanded for users
Before this update, X users already had the option to choose who could reply to their posts with settings like Everyone, Accounts you follow, and Only Accounts you mention. Adding "Verified accounts" to the mix could give users even more control over their interactions on the platform. However, anyone mentioned in a post can always reply.
New feature aims to reduce harassment and misinformation
Limiting replies to verified accounts is reasoned to help reduce harassment, trolling, and the spread of false information. In doing so, it appears that X aims to create a safer online space for its users. That said, there are still bots with verified labels on the platform. Since X gives priority to replies from verified accounts, it makes it easy to distinguish the quality of threads that are started by users who have paid for a verification checkmark.
X premium subscription offers additional features
In India, X Premium subscription costs Rs. 900 per month for iOS and Android. For the web, the monthly prices are much lower at Rs. 650. The annual subscription for the web version costs Rs. 6,800/year. For Android and iOS, the yearly plan costs Rs. 9,400. This subscription comes with extra perks like the ability to edit posts, publish longer posts and videos, fewer ads, and undo posts.
