Why Twitter's Mac app disappearance has left users fuming
X, previously known as Twitter, has unexpectedly discontinued its legacy app for Mac. Until recently, the old Twitter Mac app was available in the Mac App Store. Now, users are being asked to "upgrade" to the X Mac for iPad version. However, this transition has not been smooth with several users reporting account suspensions after switching to the new app.
Legacy Twitter app offered ad-free experience
The legacy Twitter app for Mac was favored by many users due to its ad-free environment. Unlike the modern X platform, it did not feature ads, promotions, or community notes. This provided a unique user experience free from scams and unwanted ads. The new X app for iPad includes all modern features such as AI and premium options but lacks the ad-free environment of its predecessor.
Compatibility issues with new X app outrage users
The new iPad X app is only compatible with Apple laptops that have Apple Silicon chips, such as M1 chips or higher. This leaves a significant number of older Intel laptops unable to use the app. Users with older Macs are now required to use the website version of X and those wishing to reduce ads will need to subscribe to Twitter Premium. Several users have also reported account suspensions after switching to the X iPad app and logging in.
