MicroSD cards, the tiny chips that expand storage on our phones, are set to get a whole lot bigger. No, not literally, but in terms of capacity as two major card-makers have unveiled the world's first 1 Terabyte microSD cards. They are insanely fast and offer just the right solution to store loads of 4k content without spending much. Here's all about them.
SanDisk and Micron offer 1TB microSD cards
Taking the stage at Mobile World Congress, storage giants Micron and Western Digital's SanDisk unveiled their respective cards with 1TB storage. We have seen 1TB SD cards before, but microSDs with such capacity have never happened - a fact that makes this development a game-changer. Not to mention, fitting that much storage in such a small body is incredible in itself.
And, they are incredibly fast as well
The new microSD cards are not just about capacity, they are insanely fast too. SanDisk's Extreme UHS-I microSDXC features read speeds of 160MB/s and write speeds of 90MB/s; it is said to be twice as fast as regular UHS-I cards. Micron's card, on the other hand, lags slightly behind with 100MB/s read speeds but you still get 95MB/s for writing.
How much content you can store in 1TB?
For perspective, with a 1TB card, you can store nearly 20,000 RAW 16-megapixel images taken from a DSLR or about 160 hours of full-HD content.
Also, they cost over Rs. 30,000
Just like all fancy things, the world's first microSD cards with 1TB storage won't come cheap. SanDisk will be charging $449.49, which is approximately Rs. 32,000, for its card, when it starts shipping them in April. Meanwhile, Micron has not announced the price but claims it would be priced 'competitively'. So, don't expect a major change there, at least in the early days.
But, do you really need a 1TB microSD card?
Now, 1TB microSD cards are good, but do you really need a card with this much storage? Frankly, not unless you shoot and keep a lot of high-quality 4k content on your device. Apps and games eat up storage, but 1TB is way too much room for any of that. Either way, it's good to have it as an option.
