2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to protein researchers
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced the winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. One half of the award goes to David Baker for "for computational protein design." The other half has been jointly awarded to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper "for protein structure prediction." Baker created the first protein that was entirely different to all known existing proteins.
What did Hassabis and Jumper create?
Hassabis and Jumper have successfully utilised artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the structure of almost all known proteins. In 2020, Hassabis and Jumper presented an AI model called AlphaFold2.
