Windows 10 update deleting files: Here's what you can do
Microsoft is facing flak for letting a bug slip into the latest version of Windows 10 or the famously dubbed October 2018 update. The bug, as many users described on Reddit and Microsoft's support site, is deleting files for some users, leaving them in a situation of crisis. It is not exactly clear why or how the files are being deleted. Here's more.
Users' profiles and data attached to them being deleted
Though the source of the problem isn't clear, many users have reported the bug in question appears to be deleting entire user profiles. This way, it is wiping out all associated folders, including those of documents, photos, music, and videos. Not every user is facing the problem, but the high volume of complaints clearly highlights the seriousness of the issue at hand.
Best option: Back up your data or do not upgrade
The best way out at the moment is not installing Windows 10 October Update, at least not right now. It can be a tad difficult for some, but the problem appears to be occurring only after upgrading to the latest version. So, better wait until Microsoft addresses the issue or proceed only after backing up all essential files on an external disk.
What to do if already upgraded?
If you've already upgraded with no backup, disable a Windows policy that deletes user files after a certain age. Just type gpedit in Windows search and navigate to 'Run Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/User Profiles' to disable 'Delete user profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart' feature. It worked for some users and might prevent your profile from being deleted.
And if the files are already gone, use this tool
No guarantees on this, but some users have reported that file recovery software Recuva helped them get back their lost data. Just run a deep scan with the tool as soon as possible or the data would be overwritten. Microsoft, on the other hand, has stated it is 'actively investigating the issue' to issue a fix.
