Now, Windows users can send files wirelessly to Samsung phones
What's the story
Even with all the advancements and tools, we don't have a native solution to quickly transfer files between Windows 10 and Android.
The problem has been around for long, but Microsoft is working on a solution now - a way to enable Wi-Fi-based transfers.
And, as it turns out, this method is already live for Samsung phone users.
Here are more details.
Technique
How the method works
The data transfer option revolves around using the 'Your Phone' app pre-installed on Windows 10.
This phone-syncing solution links with Samsung's 'Link to Windows' app over Wi-Fi and opens an interface that allows the user to simply drag and drop files - be it photos or large videos - to and from any supported Samsung Galaxy smartphone.
Restriction
However, there are some restrictions on transfer
The feature works seamlessly but comes with certain restrictions.
For instance, the transfer only works when both the devices are operating on the same Wi-Fi network.
Additionally, you can only send up to 100 files in one go, with each one not more than 512MB in size (which is not enough for sending full-sized movies and other content).
Steps
So, how can you transfer data?
For instant transfer, install the latest Insider build of Windows 10 on your PC, launch the 'Link To Windows' app on your Galaxy device, and connect them using Wi-Fi.
Once that is done, open the 'Your Phone' app on the PC, head over to the Gallery or My files section, select files, and drag them to a PC folder.
Support
Eventually, other phones may also get the support
As this 'Your Phone' feature moves from Insider to a stable build of Windows, we expect other Android phones to be supported, as well.
This means that you would soon have the ability to transfer photos, videos, and documents from any Android device to a Windows 10 PC (and reverse) over Wi-Fi.
The roll-out timeline, however, still remains unclear.
Information
'Your Phone' app also offers calling and other capabilities
Along with file transfer, the 'Your Phone' app of Windows 10 also offers the ability to make/answer calls directly from the PC as well as gives access to smartphone notifications and messages.
