WhatsApp to allow users to message each other via usernames
WhatsApp is currently developing a username feature with PIN support, as part of its latest update via the Google Play Beta Program. The new version, 2.24.18.2, aims to enhance user communication and privacy on the platform. Once implemented, users will have the option to be contacted on WhatsApp through their username, eliminating the need for sharing their phone numbers.
Feature to enhance privacy
The username feature will offer users more control over their privacy settings, and provide an alternative method for initiating new conversations on the platform. However, it's important to note that those who already have your contact number will continue seeing it as usual.
PIN support for usernames
In addition to the username feature, WhatsApp is also developing a PIN code option for usernames. This four-digit PIN will serve as an extra layer of privacy, especially when interacting with new contacts. To prevent unwanted messages, first-time users contacting your username will need to enter this PIN. However, this requirement won't apply to ongoing conversations and the feature is entirely optional.
