WhatsApp 'Delete for Everyone' feature updated: Details here
Peer-to-peer messaging service WhatsApp has issued a new update that improves its 'Delete for Everyone' feature. The feature, which allows users to delete messages in any conversation, was introduced last year, and has seen many changes since. The new update seeks to make the feature even more robust and prevent manipulation. Meanwhile, WhatsApp is also working on adding Sticker support. Here are the details.
Here's when you won't be able to delete the message
When the 'Delete for Everyone' feature was introduced last year, users were given a window of 7 minutes to delete messages after they sent them, which was subsequently increased to 1 hour 8 minutes and 16 seconds. Now, according to WABetaInfo, this update has added a check "where if the recipient of the message does not receive the delete request for the message in 13 hours, 8 minutes, and 16 seconds then the message will not be deleted."
This is what the new update essentially means for you
The new feature has added a check to prevent manipulation. If the recipient of a message does not receive a delete request within the aforementioned stipulated timeframe, the message cannot be deleted. Simply speaking, if you want to delete a message sent to a friend, your friend will have to approve your delete request within the timeframe.
The new update seeks to prevent manipulation
Notably, all the work including the request for deletion, approval etc. works in the background so users don't have to take care of it in the front end. The new update, with the check, seeks to prevent users using modded (modified) versions of WhatsApp from deleting messages that are days, sometimes even months and years old from conversations.
